What Have We Been Up To

We have been busy learning in Room 107.  In Fundations we have finished reviewing all of the letters and their sounds.  We reviewed the formations of each especially the lowercase letters.  We expect that all first graders are using lowercase letters in their daily writing unless it is the start of a sentence or someone's name.  In math we finished Topic 1 - Understanding Addition and have moved onto Topic 2 - Understanding Subtraction.  It is very beneficial to continue to practice the addition math facts.  Knowledge of the addition facts will help your child with subtraction and also as the problems begin to become more difficult.  In writing we have been working on our All About Me book.  We have been focusing on how to write a complete sentence, use punctuation, and using neat lowercase letters.  We completed our last page by writing a list of our favorite things.  On Thursday, we talked about Christopher Columbus.  While we celebrate him here in America we learned he actually landed in the Bahamas.  We played a game that helped us learn about directions on a map.  We also read a poem together. On Friday we enjoyed a Berenstain Bear's story that was made into a short show.  We filled our first grade ticket jar again and this was our reward for our hard work.  All of us really seemed to enjoy the show.  I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!
