Weeks of February

We have had a couple short choppy weeks leading up to the vacation but have been busy and having fun.  In reading we were learning about the long vowel sounds and sneaky - e.  We also learned about President's Day.  In writing we were finishing up our research and then writing our informative paper about Chickens.  We worked with a partner to become an expert in one category.  Then each group was responsible for writing that section of our report.  We published a class big book.  In math we have been working on subtraction to 20.  We have been using addition and subtraction together to help us solve different problems. We also revisited the parts of 10 so that we would be ready for our bowling trip.   We got to have a pajama day and movie day on Thursday, since we weren't going to be at school on Friday.  First graders earned 50 HOOT cards so they earned their movie day.  On Friday we had a great time on our bowling field trip and then ended the day with a Valentine's Day celebration.  Be sure to read the post about our field trip.

First graders are also working on the Random Acts of Kindness Challenge.  We are challenging ourselves to do 120 Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) before the 120th day of school.  A RAK is anything you can do, without being asked, that brightens someones day or helps someone.  It is unplanned and you are not asked to do it.  It can be something as simple as telling the bus driver to have a great weekend or helping a sibling tie his shoes.  For every RAK done please fill in one heart and return it to school.  The vacation is a great time to try and help out a friend, neighbor, or stranger.  If we all work together hopefully Room 107 will reach 120!

Next week, is our winter vacation so we will not have school.  I hope everyone has a fantastic break and finds some time to enjoy the snow, read a good book or do something to make someone smile.  Have a Happy Valentine's Day & a Wonderful Winter Break!
