Weeks of February 22 & February 29

We have had a couple of great weeks back since vacation.  Last week we began our researching for our own Informative Report.  Each student in researching one mammal, either a raccoon, skunk, or bat, so they will be able to write their own Informative Report.  Some of us stayed in Room 107 to research raccoons but some of us went to Room 104 or Room 107 to research bats and skunks.  In Fundations we continued to learn about blends.  A blend is two or more consonants that blend together where each letter is making a sound. We have been working with a 120 Chart in math to see number patterns and for skip couting.

This week we had a fun time celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. Each day we enjoyed a mystery reader who would share the book of the day with us.  We loved dressing each day in theme.  You can see more about Suessville week in the post.   In Fundations we were introduced to digraph blends.  These blend a digraph with another consonant.  Some examples of a digraph blend crunch and shrub.  In writing we began our draft of our mammal research paper.  We need to remember that each section needs to begin with a topic sentence, uses only our researched facts and ends with a closing sentence.   We are working on using sentence variety.  This is where we begin each sentence in a different way.  This can be very tricky but everyone is doing a great job!  We have five sections in our paper so we have been doing a lot of writing!  In math we finished up our topic on using the 120 Chart and will be moving onto place value.

Just a reminder that we do go outside everyday for recess and this time of year can be tricky to figure out the weather.  It is best that students have coats, hats or mittens still in case it is cold out during our recess time.

Weeks of February

We have had a couple short choppy weeks leading up to the vacation but have been busy and having fun.  In reading we were learning about the long vowel sounds and sneaky - e.  We also learned about President's Day.  In writing we were finishing up our research and then writing our informative paper about Chickens.  We worked with a partner to become an expert in one category.  Then each group was responsible for writing that section of our report.  We published a class big book.  In math we have been working on subtraction to 20.  We have been using addition and subtraction together to help us solve different problems. We also revisited the parts of 10 so that we would be ready for our bowling trip.   We got to have a pajama day and movie day on Thursday, since we weren't going to be at school on Friday.  First graders earned 50 HOOT cards so they earned their movie day.  On Friday we had a great time on our bowling field trip and then ended the day with a Valentine's Day celebration.  Be sure to read the post about our field trip.

First graders are also working on the Random Acts of Kindness Challenge.  We are challenging ourselves to do 120 Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) before the 120th day of school.  A RAK is anything you can do, without being asked, that brightens someones day or helps someone.  It is unplanned and you are not asked to do it.  It can be something as simple as telling the bus driver to have a great weekend or helping a sibling tie his shoes.  For every RAK done please fill in one heart and return it to school.  The vacation is a great time to try and help out a friend, neighbor, or stranger.  If we all work together hopefully Room 107 will reach 120!

Next week, is our winter vacation so we will not have school.  I hope everyone has a fantastic break and finds some time to enjoy the snow, read a good book or do something to make someone smile.  Have a Happy Valentine's Day & a Wonderful Winter Break!

Weeks of November 30 & December 6

It was so nice to get to talk to everyone at Parent Teacher Conferences.  Please know I am always available if you have any comments or concerns about your child.  I am very happy with all the progress everyone has made since September and look forward to see what more they will accomplish as the school year continues.

We are all getting ready for the holidays but still continue to be productive.  In writing we finished our personal narratives and had a chance to share them with each other.  We have now begun writing persuasive essays.  We are trying to persuade the first grade teachers to let the first graders choose their own seat at lunch!  We'll have to see how good they are at persuading us.  I have heard a lot of good reasons already.  In Fundations we have been learning about the suffix -s.  When we add an -s to the end of the word that is a noun it becomes a plural word(cats, dogs). We learned that this means there is more than 1.  We can also add it to the end of an action word it means someone is doing something (runs, hops).  When we were introduced to this new concept we found out that -s sometimes says /z/  when it is at the end of the word (bugs). In math we have been learning how to use addition to help us solve subtraction problem.  Please be sure to practice your math facts.  When the students know their math facts they are able to easily see the relationship between the subtraction and addition problems.  We had a very quick science unit on matter.  We learned that there are 3 states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas.  We learned a little bit the properties of matter.  Then we got to do some hands on experiments to better understand the properties of matter. We loved doing the experiments and working with all our first grade friends!

Trying to Persuade Each Other

Week of November 2

It was a busy week here in Room 107.  This week we began our next Fundations unit on bonus letters.  We learned why the letters f, l, s, and z are so special.  When we find these letters at the end of the word after a short vowel then we need to double it.  In math we finished Topic 2 and began Topic 3.  We will be looking at ten frames and what the relationship between 5 and 10.  In writing we shared our finished Starlab narratives.  We have begun our own personal narratives. Everyone has chosen their small moment that they will be writing about.  I am very excited to hear everyone's story.

On Wednesday we had the opportunity to attend the NED Show.  All of Pine Glen was highly amused and engaged in this assembly.  The NED Show is a character education program that focuses on 3 important traits.  NED is the cartoon character who helps us remember these three traits - Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best. We learned how to be a champion both in and out of school by remembering NED.  What kept us so engaged were the stories and the use of NED's yo-yos!  Your child may ask for a way to earn a yoyo because they will be on sale at Pine Glen until Friday, November 13.  We learned that Pine Glen got to experience the NED Show thanks to not only Ms. Zanotti but another school who had raised money from their yo-yo sales.  We learned that we too could "pay it forward" by purchasing yo-yos so another school would get to see the show.  It is a wonderful program with a valuable message.  If you would like to help bring this program to another school and your child would like their very own NED yo-yo you may send in money in their green folder.

October Fun

We have continued learning many new things in a Room 107.  In Fundations we have been learning about digraphs.  A digraph is 2 letters together that make 1 sound. (sh, th,wh, ch, ck) we continue adding words each week to our list if trick words.  Keep practicing them at home!  In math we are working on solving subtraction problems.  We have learned different strategies to help us solve problems.  The strategies that we have worked on is using manipulatives (fingers, cubes), use a number line, or use known facts.  In writing, we finished our Starlab narratives.  After finishing our drafts we worked on revising and adding another detail.  Then we illustrated our finished piece.  Be sure to look for the draft coming home next week.

On Thursday, Pine Glen kicked off ASK.  This is a school wide positive behavior system.  ASK reminds us to ask ourself- Is it appropriate?  Is it safe? Is it kind?  Ms. Zanotti and Mr. Lyons talked about what this would look like in the hallway. We will be earning HOOT cards for following this! To kick it off Ms. Pavilcek even brought in an owl for us to see.  Each month we will be talking about different areas in the school and what we should look like while we are there.

On Friday afternoon, we celebrated all of our READO readers!  We were very impressed with all the fun reading that has been happening at home.  Be sure to check your child's folder for November's READO board.  This is a great way to make reading FUN!
